@apps why would automatic backup be removed?

@tjk
This was done for two reasons. First one, some people were surprised to be still connected while deleting and installing back the app.
The second raison was about settings concerning the push notifications that was restored.
As Fedilab has its own import/export feature, it seems legit to stop using.

@apps Doesn't the Fedilab feature require users to remember to manually go to settings and hit export? And manually import later? I thought the point of the Google backup was that it was automatic, and consistent with other apps.

@tjk
Sure. Initially, this feature was disabled, we enabled it and got only bad feedback.
Unfortunately, this is hardcoded and we cannot suggest it as an option. We are somewhat trapped in this situation.

Maybe we can find a compromise by excluding the user table in dB and push notification in settings.

@apps That makes sense to me. I believe the important part is saving the settings, so setup isn't a chore. Any cached data can be automatically refetched, and user settings are security sensitive, so I wouldn't expect those to be exported. (I don't understand the push notification issue so I trust you there!)
